Over the years tertiary institutions in Kenya offering media and film studies have grown in number. This number is inclusive of those offering degrees, certificates and diplomas. This goes to show that Kenyans have realised the huge potential that lies in the media and film industry that has the potential of generating over 40 billion KSHS to the national economy and create more than 250000 jobs annually. Education is an investment in the future and going by the strides that are being realized in the film industry then the future is very bright for those willing to pursue careers in it.
As part of its contribution to students in the media and film institutions; the annual KIFF has as one of its main activities, the student forum. Here KIFF acts as a link between students in such institutions and film industry stakeholders, with whom they interact with through workshops and Q&A sessions. Such sessions are not only limited to local filmmakers but also to international ones who are part of the festival too. To boost the creative effort of students, student films from different institutions locally and globally are selected and put up for competition. Those who win are awarded trophies and get a foot- in- the- door in the competitive but rewarding world of film.
As KIFF this year celebrates its fifth anniversary, the student forum will this time welcome the participation of students in primary and secondary schools through their drama clubs. This will give them a feel of the Kenyan film industry and more so satisfy any curiosity regarding film.
Animation which was a preserve of foreign filmmakers is gaining popularity in the Kenyan industry, advertisers have recognised its effectiveness in communication and film makers have dared to venture into it, as well as Media institutions that offer courses in the same. To boost the profile of young Kenyan animators KIFF will accommodate them by showcasing their works, side by side with international ones.
KIFF realizes that young talent needs to be recognised and tapped early and this forms the basis of the student forum which gives youngsters an indispensable opportunity to release their talents and to make collaborations with seasoned filmmakers that would last for along time, which in turn continues to propel the industry to new heights.
