Cinema provides us with a sense of identity and belonging, linking our past through the present with the future. It allows us to share knowledge about the cultural heritage of different communities at the international level and promotes intercultural dialogue and encourages mutual respect.
Festivals helps us to maintain and forge social cohesion and dialogue and generate income and thereby contribute towards paving the way to sustainable development especially for creative economy.
Cultural heritage are under threat, endangered by factors such as globalization cultural homogenization and lack of appreciation and understanding. Transmission is also threatened by forms of social transformation including migration and urbanization which often separate people especially youth from knowledgable elders, formal education systems or mass media.
Information if not locally contextualized may place little value on traditional knowledge and skills. Cinema is one of the ways we can keep our passage of time.
Capacity building workshops during the festival gives us a platform to revitalize and strengthen the relationship between masters and apprentices which is one of the ways we can facilitate the transmission of knowledge and skills.
Through festival we can enlighten our common destiny.
Welcome to the 5th edition of the Kenya International Film Festival.
