The Kenya International Film Festival recognizes that to encourage the growth of the film industry Africa, forums to discuss issues affecting the industry need to be availed to filmmakers and stake holders. Apart from screening films the festival holds various workshops and round table discussions. The workshops to be held this year include:

1. Intellectual Property Workshop
This workshop gives you insight on all the legal frameworks surrounding protection of your literary work.
The workshop will be facilitated by a group of lawyers known as Wetin Lawyers Dey do Seif…? The moderator is Efere Ozako.
The topics that will be discussed at the forum include;

  • Defining the relationships in the film industry and the role of other professionals
  • Structuring contracts, licensing agreements, etc
  • Intellectual Property rights: identifying your IP rights and tackling infringement
  • Exploiting the finished product: distribution and modes of exhibition

The workshop will be on the 24th of October at the Alliance Francaise Seminar room. Attendance is by invitation.

2. East African Film Makers Forum
This is a forum for film makers in the region to come together and discuss some of the most pertinent issues facing the industry. Some of the issues that will form the agenda include;

  • Regional Co-production treaty
  • Harmonization of filming tariffs
  • Relation between tourism and film
  • Technical support functions and importation of equipments
  • Lobbying respective governments
  • Presentation from the East African film festival network chaired by Burundi
  • Formation of the East African film fund
  • Access to funds

The forum will be on 26th to 27th at the Alliance Francaise Seminar room. Attendance is by invitation.

3. Pitching
This is a roundtable discussion with the donor community. Panellists will be representatives of the Jan Vrijman Fund, Hivos, and Africa the Picture.
Some of the issues forming the agenda are:

  • How to present proposals
  • What funds are available for film makers

The workshop will run on the 26th at the Alliance Francaise Seminar room and is by invitation only.

4. Presentation by Kenya Film Classification Board.
This is a forum for film makers and the Classification Board to discuss issues of Censorship and Classification.
The agenda will;

  • Parental Advisory
  • Debate on Classification vice a vie Censorship

This will be held at the Alliance Francaise Seminar room on the 25th at 2PM. Participation is by invitation only.

5. Screenwriting Workshop
These workshops will be held in Kisumu, Eldoret, and Mombasa.
The workshops will be facilitated by veteran film makers who are also screenwriters.
The workshops in Mombasa will be facilitated by Nathan Asiago on 22nd  at the Alliance Francaise. The class will be to teach potential film makers on how to write an award winning script. 
The workshop will be a one day session and participation is by invite only.

6. Translation of African Literature to Cinema
This forum will be facilitated by the award winning renowned African writer, Wole Soyinka.
The workshop will be a forum for film makers to learn how to translate African literature to award winning films.
There has been a debate on how to best translate some of our literature such as Aminata, Kilio cha Haki and others into film.
If you are one of the film makers with such a vision then this is one workshop you should not miss.
Participation in the workshop is by invite only.

7. Film Trainers Workshop
This is a forum for film lecturers and trainers to discuss the film curriculum in Kenya.
Some of the topics on the agenda are;

  • Discussion and topics on curriculum in Film Training.
  • Network to set up frameworks
  • Setting up of a resource centre as well as cinema clubs in schools.

Panellists at the workshop will include a representative of Kenya Film Commission and renowned author Wole Soyinka.
The workshop will be held on the 26th October at Century Cinemax at Prestige. Participation is by invite only.

8. Music for Film
This workshop will be on how to compose for film as not all music for film. The workshop is for film makers and song writers.
The facilitator is a Kenyan- American song writer and rapper, James Kamwero also known as Noggz
The workshop will run on the 27th at the Alliance Francaise Seminar Room. Participation for the workshop is by invite only.

9. Film meets Fashion
Most film makers don’t pay attention to fashion hence the disaster in shooting a film with the wrong costume.
This workshop is the long awaited solution for film makers. This is where you learn how to dress your cast the way you intended in the script.
This workshop will be held on the 28th of October from 2 P.M to 4 P.M. at Alliance Francaise. It is by invitation only.

10. Introduction to African Cinema Studies
African cinema history from a postcolonial perspective
This two-day seminar will provide a general introduction to the history and theory of African filmmaking and video-making, as well as the guidelines for film reviewing and postcolonial content analysis.
The seminar will aim to offer the basic tools to contextualize the origins and the main aspects of African cinema, analyzing it as both a cultural industry and an African art form. Finally, the course will also look at the way African video and new digital technologies have opened up new ways of conceiving the future of African film. 
The lecture will be facilitated by Federico Olivier, Cultural Attaché at the Spanish Embassy at the National Museum on 26th and 27th  October 2011 both at 10h00 – 13h00

The workshop is for open for students only.

11.  Master class on Video Filmmaking: Technical Issues
This one day Master Class is designed for young filmmakers who are still grappling with the technical aspects of production. We will talk about issues surrounding the camera, compositional elements, recording formats, location sound recording, lighting, editing, final mixing and color grading. The participants will be encouraged to discuss the technical problems they encountered with the above, whilst making their films. Possible solutions will be discussed.
Included in this Master Class will be a presentation on the various video formats that exist between Standard Definition and High Definition and how to deal with the differences between these formats. The technical considerations required when working in these various formats and how to choose the right format for initial acquisition in order to maximize your film's market potential will be addressed.

This workshop will be held on 22nd at 10 am to 4pm at the Alliance Francaise Seminar Room. It for FILM STUDENTS ONLY
